Strategy: Mitigate impact of air pollutant emissions on the environment
Goal: Reduce SOx, NOx, VOCs, and TSP constantly pursuant to regulatory standards.

The Company used tightened measures, controlled the sources of air pollution, and improved the air quality to solve the air pollution problems effectively and protect the health of the employees and the residents of the nearby communities. In addition to the regular testing of the boiler equipment and exhaust pipe, the Houli Mill and Tayuan Mill of the Paper Division set up automated and continuous air quality monitoring facilities and connected them to the equipment of the competent authority to ensure compliance of the emissions with laws and regulations. Improvement measures are taken for the pollutants on an ongoing basis and the following three phases are designed for the improvement: source management, process system optimization, and end control.

The source management includes reducing the consumption of coal, heavy oil, and other fossil fuels by integrating energy resources. The Container Box Division has changed oil-fire boilers to gas-fired boilers and used less pollutive natural gas since 2013. Currently, natural gas boilers are put into service in the CLC Panchiao Plant, Tayuan Plant (I & II), Miaoli Plant, Taichung Plant, and Yanchao Plant. The Talin Plant finished the commissioning of its natural gas boiler at the beginning of 2020.

Division Performance
Paper The Best Available Control Technology (BACT) equipment was set up for the Houli Mill. The Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment was retrofitted to meet the best emission standard of BACT and the mill achieved a reduction of SOx emission by 47.9 tons (19.6%). The bunker mounted in the mill enabled the Paper Division to reduce the emission of particular matters by 14.3 tons with a reduction rate of 32.1% in terms of TSP (Total Suspended Particulates).

Whole Company The particular matters in the pipe was reduced by 20.5%.
