● Strategy:Toward low-carbon and green procurement and build a green, sustainable supply chain.
● Goals of 2030:Green procurement ratio at 45% / FSC™ pulp ratio at 95%.

Promoting Green Procurement

To support national policies, connect with international trends, and practice SDG: “Promote the green economy, ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”, we actively implement green procurement according to the CLC’s green procurement related SOPs to actively prioritize the purchase of raw materials, plant facilities, and office supplies certified by the Green Mark, Energy Label, and FSC™ to reduce environmental impact. In 2020, we used 1.72 million MT of recovered paper, with the utilization rate up to 92.0% (in terms of industrial paper was up to 97.0%). Although the use of FSC™ pulp was disrupted by the pandemic, the annual procurement ratio was still up to 89.5% (target 90%). In 2020, the overall amount of green procurement reached a new high to NT$7.1 billion, accounting for 33.5% of the total. Besides being ahead of domestic enterprises in terms of green procurement amount, we have earned Excellence in Green Procurement from the EPA for many years for our efforts in waste reduction and recycling. In 2020, six CLC mills/plants with a green procurement amount up to NT$3.3 billion were award Excellence in Green Procurement by the EPA and outstanding green procurement certification by local governments.

❙ Small Steps for Correct Frontline Waste Sorting, A Big Help for Production at Paper Companies

At CLC, we put the circular economy as an important development target. In 2020, we recycled about 1.13 million MT of domestic recovered paper. However, recovered paper in Taiwan usually mixes with 10-13% of household waste (e.g. plastics, hemp ropes, and waste food paper containers), causing additional burdens to residual process materials disposal. Thus, CLC initiated the “Recovered Paper Source Sorting Guidance Program” in 2018 to increase the proportion of quality recovered paper and reduce the production of impurities and waste through endpoint management. Therefore, we arrange awareness education on correct paper sorting for recovery stations, cleaning teams, and waste collectors to significantly reduce waste production through prevention, reduction, recovery, and recycling. We also organized activities to promote correct waste sorting and recovery for citizens. After 2 years of efforts, besides reducing impurities in recovered paper by 6% to significantly improve the quality of recovered paper, recovered paper suppliers have become more eager to recover waste food paper containers. The number of recovery company thus increased from one company at the beginning of promotion to a total of 36 after 17 new companies joined the force in 2020.

Besides increasing the sources of waste food paper container for CLC, the project has helped create win-win for industries, the environment, and society. In addition, we also launched cooperation with the Swedish Tetra Pak to recycle the tailings of its food paper container into eco-friendly hand towels to maximize material use and thereby promote the efficient of the circular economy in Taiwan.

❙ No Conflict Minerals

To avoid using conflict minerals acquired from illegal means is what the CLC does to realize the CSR in human rights protection and environment protection for a sustainable supply chain. We hereby guarantee that all CLC industrial paper and corrugated boxes do not use conflict minerals including tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold from the Congo Republic and nearby countries and regions in the production process.
